Suspensions for Bonneville and Thruxton India

We have all heard about the rear suspensions of bonneville and have so much to say about them once we have experienced them; especially on the India roads.

While they are a lot of options available worldwide. In India the Triumph Riders seem to be very much inclined towards the Paoli suspensions  that were designed for Royal Enfields Continental GT.


The gas charged rear suspension are adjustable and fit both the classic Triumphs bikes the bonneville and the Thruxton. Of course a little nudge is required to make them fit. The bike beautifully  rises up by a wonderful 4 inches at the seat level and a few inches at the bottom.

A little spicy in colour they can be easily painted or powder coated, they are much better for the Indian roads. They are easy to adjust without tools and should adjusted according to the weight and driving conditions.  A simple thumb rule for adjusting the suspension load would be to tighten the suspension by four to five thread rings for a 70 to 80 Kg person riding solo. Make sure you do it equally on both side and mark the spot.

Fitting them:

  • The gas cylinder is placed like shown on the photo above and we haven’t been able to gather enough information to talk about the cylinder being upside down position.  All we can vouch for is that two riders have been using them with the cylinders being placed upside down without any problems. You may have to do that if you place a rear calliper relocation bracket or a certain panniers also.
  • The seat will have to be lifted a bit in order for you to fit the shocks since they are bigger in length that the stock ones.
  • The washers and screws need to be changed to fit the new needs as well.Of course the threads size will remain the same only the length of the screw nut will increase.
